Piston

The piston comprises of several parts.

  • Main Body - Tend to be made from aluminium, often now coated with Teflon to help avoid seizures and reduce wear.
  • Piston Ring - There may be 1 or more rings on each piston depending on engine type
  • Gudgeon Pin - This attaches the piston to the Conrod via the [Little End Bearing]]
  • Piston Circlips - There are 2 of these per piston, these stop the Gudgeon Pin from coming out the side of the piston.

Pistons come in various sizes and are sized to match the Barrel. The Barrel is Bored/Honed to size and a clearance of approximately 0.1mm is left between the piston and bore. Most kart pistons have an arrow marked on the top of the piston, it is important that this is pointed towards the exhaust port of the engine. Failure to do this will mean the ring will spring open into one of the ports in the barrel. This will cause severe wear on the Liner at best and at worst will snap the ring, damaging the piston, scoring the liner. In short do not get this wrong.
